Research and Development

Research and Development is the critical first step to producing beautiful floor coverings that also meet our high performance standards. Product development teams exist for each division of product groups we manufacture at Shaw. The development process is usually divided into two broad segments: Design, and Technical Development.

Design - In floor covering, the customer's visual identification of an outstanding style is the first step to becoming part of their environment. Artists and trained Designers create aesthetics our customers want, in individual products and product lines. Designers must know the customer base they serve, and successfully project trends in their market segments. Various drawing, illustrating and color skills are absolute requirements for these positions. Most design positions now require knowledge of specialized computer equipment used in the field. In addition, design often involves customer interaction that requires poise and presence with internal and external groups. Design managers, designers, colorists and others comprise the creative team. Requirements in this area include an educational background in the required field, or demonstrated experience in the product line.

Technical Product Development - Beauty isn't everything. Once we know how the desired product looks, someone must decide how best to produce it. We have high standards of performance for every product. Technical product development centers on creating the feel and durability appropriate for each product line. Content and construction are critical to the success of each product. Individuals entering Technical Development often very experienced in the mass-production of our products. Their manufacturing experience is an appropriate background because of the knowledge that is required to create reproducible product specifications, optimize production capabilities and use of raw materials, and to maintain strong relationships between development and production. Other desired backgrounds may include specialization in materials or machinery used in the processes. Included in the technical team are managers, manufacturing technicians, lab technicians, product trial expeditors, and administrators who track all styles and components.
