Shaw Succeeds in Floor Covering Weekly Retailer Survey


Dalton, Ga. - 2009- Shaw Industries emerges as the leading brand in Floor Covering Weekly's annual ReCo Report, comprised of nearly 500 survey responses from retailers across the nation. The goal of the survey is to capture the pulse of the general opinions of flooring retailers regarding national flooring brands. The Wayman Group Inc., an independent marketing research and consulting firm located in New York, conducts the survey from January through April each year, gathering retailer satisfaction levels of the previous year. Shaw has continued to increase in its standings in all attributes, taking the leadership position in carpet, hardwood and laminate in this year's report for 2009.

Participants in the survey consist of specialty flooring stores, flooring contractors, home centers and furniture stores. The following characteristics make up the respondents:

          • Mean annual flooring sales of these businesses decreased only slightly from 2008 to 2009
          • The number of retailers selling more than $10 million increased 35.8% of the respondents are associated with some manufacturer loyalty program
          • 27.3% are in some franchise/co-op/buying group
          • 30.1% declared themselves "independent"

          The analysis compares the top brands in each category, ranking each brand by sales percentages per segment. Shaw has been consistently ranked number one in the carpet category. Shaw's Hardwood ranking has steadily increased since 2006, taking the number one spot in 2009, surpassing Bruce in the segment as the market leader. In the laminate segment, Shaw also attained the top ranking, moving ahead of Armstrong in the 2009 results.

          Each manufacturer is then stringently assessed based on 11 key attributes pertaining to satisfaction among retailers. In 2009, Shaw ranked number one in all but two attributes for carpet, laminate and hardwood, demonstrating strong leadership across the board.
