Shaw Laminates: Green By Design

Dalton, GA - Shaw announces that the company's laminate flooring has environmental benefits. Shaw laminate uses 98% less newly harvested wood than conventional engineered hardwood products and feature EnviroCore, a high-density-fiber(HDF) core derived from recycled wood fiber, which means fewer trees are used with less waste. In addition, 100% of the post-industrial laminate manufacturing waste from the company's Ringgold facility is diverted from the landfill and used as fuel, mainly for Shaw's Waste-to-Energy facility.

According to Scott Sandlin. Shaw's vice president of hardsurface business development, Shaw laminates are inherently good environmental choices in floor covering. "Engineered to last, laminate offers  a long life span that minimize replacement. And while it stimulates the upscale look of a natural product like an exotic hardwood or ceramic tile, the actual material isn't used and the natural resource is preserved," said Sandlin.

Reduction of waste is accomplished in the packaging of Shaw laminate since 99 percent of the material used to package EnviroCore is diverted from the landfill through the use of reusable or recyclable material. The packaging material for finished laminate products uses cardboard made from 45 percent post-consumer recycled content and recyclable plastic.

Shaw's EnviroCore meets or exceeds requirements for formaldehyde emissions from Composite Panel Association(CPA). The CPA is the North American trade association for producers of particleboard(PB), medium density fiberboard(MDF), hardboard(HB), and other compatiable products.

Shaw laminate will be another initiative under the company's environmental umbrella, Shaw Green Edge. "Shaw is committed to doing more than simply talking about Shaw Green Edge initiatives. We're doing the right thing now by offering products to our dealers that solidify our commitment." said Sandlin. "We're also pleased that we have so many eco-friendly product offerings including our recyclable carpets, Epic hardwood and, now, laminate and recyclable rugs that werte just introduced at the Atlanta market."
