4 Tips for Luxury Vinyl Flooring Care & Maintenance
Luxury vinyl flooring is one of the longest-lasting, most versatile flooring options available today. It’s also beautiful and easy to care for, making it a great choice for high-traffic rooms in your home. Here are four tips for you to consider to keep it looking as good as it does after installation.
1) Get on a Schedule
With proper care, luxury vinyl flooring can stand up to some of the busiest areas in your home.
Regular care will help protect and maintain the appearance and performance of your luxury vinyl floor. We recommend the following cleaning and maintenance schedule.
- Daily: Spot clean your floors by sweeping up dirt and wiping up spills.
- Weekly: Give your floors a good overall dry cleaning using one of the tools recommended below.
- Periodic: Use a spritz bottle with a stain remover made specifically for vinyl. Spray the cleaner lightly on your floor, and immediately remove it using a dust mop. Your floors should never be saturated or wet cleaned.
2) Use the Right Cleaner
Whenever possible, get cleaner recommendations and care instructions from your flooring retailer or manufacturer. For stubborn stains, use denatured alcohol or a stain remover made specifically for vinyl. Gently rub at the stain until it is removed.
Avoid using the following cleaners on luxury vinyl flooring, as these products may damage the finish:
- Abrasive cleaners
- Lacquer thinner
Also, never use the following cleaners, as they will leave a dull film or residue on the floor:
3) Use the Right Tools
Sweep your floors regularly to keep dirt from building up and causing scratches. Use a dust mop or a broom with polypropylene or acrylic bristles. If you choose to vacuum luxury vinyl flooring, be sure to use the bare floor setting or attachment. Make sure the wheels of a vacuum or other tool are free of debris or sharp edges.
Do not use a vacuum with rotating brushes, as it could dent luxury vinyl flooring. To avoid scrapes and gouges in your floor, stay away from brushes with bristles made from steel wool or other abrasive material.
After installation, wait a minimum of 24 hours before placing heavy objects, such as furniture or appliances, on the floor. Put mats in strategic locations throughout the home to catch dirt and spills. (It’s especially critical to put mats in the entryways of the house.) However, stay away from mats with rubber or latex backing - they can permanently stain luxury vinyl flooring. Use a blanket or mat or some other item to protect your luxury vinyl when moving furniture to prevent scuffs and tears, and use floor protectors under table legs and other heavy furniture pieces to avoid permanent damage to your floor.
More homeowners are turning to luxury vinyl flooring for durable, attractive flooring. With proper care and maintenance, it can withstand some of the busiest, messiest activities in your home.
