FLOORING

BY COLOR

When you think about color, consider how balance and contrast affect the atmosphere. Reds and yellows are warm tones, while blues and greens are cool. Even neutrals can affect the "temperature" of the room.

KNOW HOW BY FLOORING TYPE

Types of Carpet: how to choose

There are four basic categories of carpet, each with its own special characteristics.

Texture: Velvety-smooth and soothing to the touch, texture carpets are luxurious. And they come in a stunning array of fashionable colors.

Twist: Twist carpets have tightly entwined yarns, some of which have sparks of color to add interest.

Loop: Loop styles are easy-going and relaxed—so you can be the same. Able to stand up to heavy traffic and activity, a loop carpet is ideal for your home's busiest areas.

Pattern: The tone-on-tone designs of pattern carpets are created by high-and-low yarns, strategically sheared.

Types of Area Rugs: how to choose

There are three defining categories of design...one is sure to be right for you.

Contemporary: Clean, crisp lines, dramatic shapes, and bold colors are characteristic of contemporary rugs.

Transitional: This look is eclectic, crossing varied styles. You might see softened geometrics, small-to large-scale florals, and organics with more detail than those found in contemporary rugs.

Traditional: The styling of traditional rugs i rich and classic. Included in this design group are Persian, oriental, and ethnic patterns.

Types of Hardwood: how to choose

There are two basic types of hardwood to choose from: solid and engineered. Both are natural hardwood and add value and lasting beauty to your home.

A great choice for many areas of your home, solid hardwood can only be installed on or above grade, always over a wood subfloor, using only the nail down installation method.

Recommended for areas with moisture exposure, engineered hardwood may be installed on, above or below grade and can be installed over concrete or wood subfloors. It can even go in the basement.

Types of Laminate: how to choose

Laminates are extraordinarily realistic and come in a wide array of species, colors, finishes, and widths.

Species: For an informal feeling, look for graining with high energy and heavy motion. Fine graining, creates a more traditional atmosphere.

Colors: Laminate colors span the spectrum. And the same "color psychology" applies: Darker colors tend to evoke cozinness and drama, while lighter colors are airy and modern.

Surfaces and finishes: High-gloss finishes are very high-end and contemporary. Hand-scraped or distressed looks are mellow and relaxed in feeling.

Widths: Wider planks are an extremely popular look, one that's beautiful in larger rooms. But thinner planks are laminate's hottest growing trend.
