Easy Flooring Choices for Busy Families

Easy Flooring Choices for Busy Family
Living with two school-aged kids, two insane dogs and a messy husband, I long ago decided that the floors of my dreams were out of the question. My dogs would destroy hardwood and my kids spill on carpet, so I figured it was going to be a tile sort of life for me.

Now, don’t get me wrong. There are definitely some great porcelain tile products out there these days. Have you seen the ones that look just like hardwood floors? But in an open two-story home with high ceilings such as mine, you would need many rugs just to dampen the noise. So, I’ve been stuck figuring out what to do with our floors that would both look great and work with my family’s lifestyle. I have literally lived with flooring I don’t like for years because I couldn’t find a product that would meet all of our needs.

Fast forward to 2015, when the HGTV Smart Home was unveiled in Austin, Texas. I’m lucky to live only about half an hour away, and I was thrilled when Shaw Floors invited me to go on a personal tour. I was obviously excited to see how the home was built and furnished. When I found out Shaw Floors had two products in the home that could meet my family’s needs, I couldn’t wait to see the space.

The first featured product is part of Shaw’s Life Happens collection. It’s a collection of carpeting that comes in various colors and textures with LifeGuard protective backing that keeps water from seeping through to the sub-floor. It has also been treated with a stain-and-soil resistant product. If you’ve spent any time researching carpets, you’ll be thrilled with the revolutionary features.
In the 2015 HGTV Smart Home, Shaw Floors featured the Life Happens Collection in a shared kids’ bedroom. The carpet is a beautiful green color, shown in the image above (Life Happens Collection, Always Active in Organic Garden). With carpet textures and patterns with names like It’s All Good and No Worries that come in many colors, there’s likely one that will work great in my (and your) home.

The Life Happens collection would take care of most of the rooms in my home, but what about the wet areas like the kitchen, entryway, laundry room and bathrooms? Of course, Shaw Floors has these areas covered, too. Their Floorté resilient vinyl flooring is featured in the laundry room of the 2015 HGTV Smart Home. The cool thing about resilient is that it looks like wood, but it’s not! It can literally go anywhere hardwood is not recommended—like bathrooms and laundry rooms. Installation is easy because the flooring is flexible, which helps hide imperfections in the floor beneath. It’s also durable, so it can stand up to kids and pets running through the house.

In the 2015 HGTV Smart Home, Shaw Floors features the Floorté™ Collection in the laundry room (shown above in Floorté Collection, Premio in Duomo). However, this would be a great product to replace the porcelain tiles in many areas of a busy home.
I’m so thankful my friends at Shaw Floors invited me to experience these new flooring options. I no longer feel stuck on what type of flooring to put in my home. Picking out the colors? That’s another story!

About Lindsay Ballard

Lindsay is a color-obsessed, stay-at-home mom of two. With the help of her husband Tom she is transforming her builder’s beige home into an inspiring and eclectic space, one Technicolor dream room at a time. Their children, Zack (age 9) and Emma (age 5), get in on the action as much as possible.

Lindsay lives outside of Austin, Texas and loves that the weather is nice enough for DIY projects year-round. Her blog is called Makely School for Girls and is a reinvention of her original home decorating and DIY blog, Living With Lindsay. Back in 2008, she started writing about the projects and ideas she was putting together for the rooms in her home, and she continued writing under that name until October of 2012. She doesn’t have any formal training other than from the School of Trial and Error, so nothing she does needs any special skills that can’t be quickly learned.

Disclosure: My friends at Shaw Floors invited me to tour the 2015 HGTV Smart Home and gave me a complimentary area rug so I could share my experience. All thoughts and opinions shared here are my own.
