Selecting a Carpet Installer
Once you've selected the perfect carpet for your space, it is time to determine who will install it. In many cases, your flooring retailer will provide installation, or make a recommendation for a good installer in your area. Either way, consider asking the following questions to ensure you get the installation you want.

How long have you been in business?
Well-established companies are often successful companies and are concerned with repeat business.

What is included in the final price?
This is an important question for both your retailer and your installer. You want to make sure you have a clear understanding from the beginning. Some issues to consider are:

  • Does the price include carpet, carpet cushion or padding and installation?
  • Are upgrades available at additional costs?
  • Is there a charge for removing and disposing of the old carpet?
  • Is there a charge for moving my furniture?
  • Does the price include threshold transitions and stair wrapping?
  • Will there be an extra charge for an in-home measurement or are estimates free?

What are the warranty terms for both the carpet/pad and the installation?
It is always a good idea to know up front what is required to maintain your warranties and the appropriate steps if an issue should occur.

Will you send a professional estimator to my home to calculate how much flooring will be required?
An estimator will determine exactly how much carpet you will need to buy and, in most cases, will determine the layout of the carpet in the room. Most will also decide where to place seams, how to match patterns, and how to minimize carpet waste. Be sure to discuss seam placement with the estimator or installer to insure that the seams are not placed in the most visible of areas based on where your furnishings will sit in the room.  While most seams go unnoticed, seam placement may make them more noticeable.

Is your installer bonded and insured?
Anyone that comes into your home to perform work should be bonded and insured. This will protect both the installer and yourself if there are any issues during the installation.

Will the installer move furniture or do I need to hire a third-party?
Verify if the installer will move the majority of your furniture or if you’ll need to hire a third-party for oversized furniture and appliances.

What type of space and equipment will the installers need access to?
The installation team will need to use your electricity to power their tools as well as an area to work.

Can you provide references or examples of your work?
Sometimes the best way to rate a company’s performance is by talking to their customers or seeing reviews on their website or social media pages.

How long will the job take?
Let’s face it; your installation is going to render your rooms unusable until the job is complete. It is always best to get a time frame for the installation from your installer before the project begins.

Will my doors have enough clearance after the new carpet is installed?
If your new carpet is thicker, your doors will have to be trimmed before they can be reinstalled. This will be your responsibility and if you are not comfortable with this sort of work, you may need to have a carpenter on hand to make the adjustments and rehang your doors.

Are my subfloors in good shape?
If your subfloor is not level or is damaged this can result in installation delays. Some installers can make the necessary repairs prior to installation; however, if the damage is extensive you may need to hire a carpenter.
